This past holiday weekend the PV Classics 11th Lassiter team swept the playoff rounds of the AAU East Coast Championship tournament 11/12 Grade Division to bring home the gold! 3 of the 4 teams in the final four were from the pool the Classics came out of and while both of those teams, which were stacked with mainly 11th and 12th graders, had beaten the Classics in pool play the scrappy 8th-11th grade "Mix Tape" team dominated in all 3 of their playoff games. Congratulations to Abby, Alayna, Brooke, Karima, Lauren, Nina, Nora, and Tiana, Assistant Coach Celine, and Coaches Lassiter and Stadnik!

Besides team practices which are typically 1-2 times per week, Classics AAU Basketball also encourages players to further develop their athletic and basketball skills outside of the normal team practices by participating in individual training programs to improve athleticism and/or basketball specific skills. These training programs are also designed for players who may not have been selected for a Classics club team, have decided to take some time off from a team and focus on improving themselves, or to supplement team practicess for players who are striving to always get better.
Classics AAU Basketball offers several different options and programs for players to participate in through well recognized trainers that Classics has affiliations with or directly run by the Classics AAU Club.
For Spring-Summer 2016, the following 3 programs are available for players to participate in to augment their skills - additional information on each is on the Classics website Player Development page with links/information to register for the specific training program:

A parent recently emailed a question regarding the upcoming tryouts....
"Hi Andy!
Do players who are already on a Classics team need to tryout again?
Thanks so much!"
REPLY:
Yes.
First we want our current team players there to show case in front of new
people. If they arent there, it makes it tougher for a coach to explain to a new player/parents why they won't make the team.
Second, per our tryouts FAQ page and in our information document there are no guarantees season to season, BUT incumbent players who have been developing will generally be at a higher skill level than most new players that come out for the first time. but again no guarantees....
If this does not answer the usual question - why do we have to try out each season, or if you need more explanation, please email or call.
Regards,
Coach Andy

Day 12 is also Give a Little, Get a Lot Day. Many of you had known Coach Mel over the years and we sadly lost him in February suddenly to cancer.
The Coach Melvin Gilliam Classics Player Scholarship Fund was started last February at his request before
he left us and has supported about 10 players whose families have been struggling with jobs challenges and transportation issues enabling them to play on a Classics team and feel better about themselves. This has been possible by the great support from the Classics family and is a way we all can play a great part of being a Classics team member as players, parents, and friends of Classics. It is NOT TOO LATE to make a year end tax deductible gift to the Coach Melvin Gilliam Classics Scholarship Fund. Checks should be payable to Classics Basketball - Coach Mel Fund, mailed to Classics Basketball, 5705 Mossrock Drive, Rockville, MD 20852 - postmarked before Dec 31, 2015. A tax donation letter will be mailed back to you so include your return address.
I hope you can help give a little towards the Coach Melvin fund so we can continue to provide support to our team members who truly need it in the new year.

It is with great sadness to report that long time Classics AAU Club Coach Charles Krafthofer's son Shaun passed away to day at the young age of 34 from complications from a brain tumor. Shaun has been living in Connecticut with his family and was the Assistant Athletic Facilities Director at the University of Hartford. Shaun has three children - Madison Zoey and Aiden.
Below is the excerpt from the gofundme website about the recent events. Donations to support Kate and the 3 girls can be made through this website - https://www.gofundme.com/shaunkraftoher
Please keep Coach Charles and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
On the morning of September 6th of labor day weekend life was normal. The Krafthofers woke up and began there day. Shortly after Shaun became acutely ill and was confused and vomiting. He was transported by ambulance to Hartford Hospital. Shortly after arriving Shaun was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor, the size of a grapefruit in front of his brain. Shaun was sedated and intubated. He was moved to the neurological icu where he remained for 2 days, while a great team of doctors treated him and determined what the best course of treatment that should be taken. On Tuesday September 8th he was taken to the operating room for major brain surgery. At this time we learned that the tumor had exploded. He is now recovering in the icu and is slowly improving everyday. There are still a lot of unknowns related to extent of injuries to his brain and time frame of recovery. Shaun will be facing a long rehab. Shaun is a loving husband to Kate and Father to Aiden 6, Zoey 3, and Madison 2. Shaun and Kate are both going to be out of work for long unknown amount of time and are facing day to day bills and very large medical bills that continue to grow. The entire network of family and friends have been very supportive to care for Shaun, Kate and the Kids.
I am sorry for the delay in updates. It is with a deep broken heart that I inform all of you that we lost Shaun this morning. He fought a long hard fight and the doctors and nurses did everything possible to save his life. This morning he was taken off life support with his family by his side. He went peacefully. As a family we are dealing with this difficult time minute by minute. It was it is going to be long difficult road, but we have great support. I will post more when we know arrangements. Again thank you for your prayers, thoughts, and donations. We love you all. The Krafthofer and Ziegler Families.

Coach Tammy Ross's 8th grade girls team reached the Gold bracket at the NTBA National tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC this past week.
